What is Tempura?

Tempura is a deep-fried dish that was introduced to Japan during the Edo period (17th-19th century) and is now considered one of Japan’s most iconic dishes.

The key feature of tempura is the light batter that covers the ingredients, giving it a crispy texture. Common ingredients include seafood and vegetables, with shrimp, squid, white fish, sweet potatoes, eggplant, and pumpkin being frequently used. These ingredients are chosen for their freshness, and the batter is typically made from a base of wheat flour, water, and egg. The thinness of the batter and its crispiness are what make tempura so delicious.

There are different ways to eat tempura, but the most common method is to dip it in a special dipping sauce called “tentsuyu.” Tentsuyu is made from a simple combination of dashi (a Japanese soup stock), soy sauce, and mirin (a sweet rice wine), which enhances the flavor of the tempura. Alternatively, tempura can also be enjoyed with salt, which allows the natural taste of the ingredients to shine through, offering a lighter and fresher flavor.

Tempura is widely enjoyed both at home and in restaurants. In particular, tempura specialty restaurants often serve freshly fried tempura right in front of you, which is a popular dining style. The freshly fried tempura, with its tempting aroma of oil and crispy texture, is a treat for the senses and is sure to captivate anyone who tries it.

In this way, while tempura has a deep historical connection to Japanese food culture, it continues to be beloved by many people today. Its simple yet rich flavors are highly appreciated worldwide.

Aki’s Note

Tempura can be enjoyed at high-end specialty restaurants, but it is also served as a side dish at home or in casual eateries. It’s not just for special occasions—it’s a dish people enjoy in daily life as well. If you want to eat tempura in a casual way, I recommend tendon. Tendon is a dish where tempura is placed on top of rice and covered with a sweet and savory sauce. You can find it in restaurants, supermarkets, and even convenience stores, making it easy to enjoy. There are many kinds of tempura to try, so be sure to give it a taste!
